[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Woo-seok] A man in his 20s who attempted to kill his father, who had paid off his debts incurred from failed cryptocurrency investments, was sentenced to prison.
The 12th Criminal Division of the Daejeon District Court (Presiding Judge Na Sang-hoon) announced on the 19th that it sentenced Mr. A (29), who was charged with attempted parricide, to five years in prison.
Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of stabbing his father with a weapon in an attempt to kill him last January.
It is known that Mr. A had accumulated tens of millions of won in debt due to failed cryptocurrency investments and was suffering from delusional disorder caused by stress from the debt.
During this time, Mr. B, the victim and father, met with Mr. A’s workplace supervisor to inquire about his son’s job. Upon hearing this, Mr. A believed his father was monitoring him and committed the crime.
Mr. B was stabbed by the weapon wielded by Mr. A and then fled. It was investigated that Mr. A chased after Mr. B to kill him.
In court, Mr. B submitted a petition for leniency stating that the incident occurred due to improper upbringing of his son.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant attempted to kill a protected family member, and the crime, though attempted, is serious in nature," but also added, "The defendant acknowledges his wrongdoing and is reflecting on his mistakes. The victim petitions for the defendant to be given another chance to reintegrate into society."
