'Crazy' Ideas Change the World... KAIST Announces Winners of Crazy Idea Contest
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] KAIST announced the selection of five winning entries for the ‘Crazy Day Idea Contest’ on the 18th. The contest, held from March 14 to April 8, aimed to discover and implement ideas embodying KAIST’s experimental and innovative spirit, including Crazy, Creative, Challenging, and Caring.
A total of 847 entries were submitted, and through a three-stage internal review based on creativity, popularity, feasibility, and ethics, one Grand Prize, one Excellence Award, and three Merit Awards were selected.
The Grand Prize went to the idea ‘Large Mind Map’ submitted by ‘KCN (Kim Han-ra).’ This experimental idea proposed by KAIST involves each member radially connecting all knowledge and information such as papers, research culture, citations, and memes to create a large mind map.
Winner Kim Han-ra stated, “Just as the neural network of the brain forms patterns of thought, by seeing the connections between each concept, we can understand what kind of thinking the organization has. By creating a KAIST-specific map of thoughts connected like a subway map, we will derive final ideas that bring great changes to the world.”
The Excellence Award was given to ‘Lighting the Lamp of Peace Mission (Lee Ji-hyung).’ This project involves installing bicycle generators on campus, where members pedal in a relay challenge to display messages on an electronic board for 10 hours. It aims to convey peace messages internally and externally amid global crises such as infectious diseases, war, and environmental pollution. The Merit Award went to ‘Reverse Day (An Seong-jun),’ which breaks role stereotypes by swapping roles, duties, and positions among members.
Other Merit Awards included ‘Treasure Hunt at KAIST (Kim Dae-ho),’ where the public solves science quizzes to find hidden treasures on campus, and ‘Beat Jang Yeong-sil! KAIST Past Exam (Lee Hong-mu),’ which creatively approaches quirky curiosities through past exam challenges.
