Shooting Incidents Across Various Locations in the US on the Weekend, Including Supermarkets and Churches
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Over the weekend, shootings occurred across various parts of the United States.
On the 15th (local time), according to the Associated Press and others, following the tragedy in Buffalo, New York, where 10 people were killed in a mass shooting at a supermarket the previous day, shootings also took place at a church in California and a flea market in Texas. Prior to this, multiple casualties were reported due to shootings near Chicago’s tourist attraction 'Cloud Gate' and near a basketball arena in Milwaukee.
At a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo the previous day, a teenage white supremacist named Payton Gendron carried out a mass shooting, killing 10 people and injuring 3. All the deceased were Black, and among the 13 people shot, 11 were Black.
The motive for the crime was identified as white supremacy and racial discrimination. Gendron, who was arrested at the scene, described himself as a fascist-supporting white supremacist in a 180-page manifesto posted online related to the incident. He expressed anxiety that American white society and culture would be replaced by people of color and showed hatred toward immigrants. It was confirmed that the firearm used by Gendron contained racial slurs against Black people.
Additionally, he was directly influenced by the March 2019 mass shooting at a mosque in New Zealand by a white supremacist, which resulted in 51 deaths. He livestreamed the scene of the crime online and mentioned that the New Zealand shooter also livestreamed his attack, stating, "Everything happening now started from that video."
U.S. President Joe Biden criticized the incident in a statement that day, saying, "Hate crimes are utterly reprehensible," and added, "Any domestic terrorist acts, including white supremacy, are contrary to American values." President Biden is scheduled to visit Buffalo on the 17th.
On Sunday the 15th, just one day after the Buffalo shooting, a mass shooting at a church in Orange County, Southern California, resulted in one death and five injuries. Police arrested the suspect and confiscated one weapon related to the shooting at the scene. Among the five injured who were transported to the hospital, four were in serious condition and one had minor injuries.
The suspect’s identity, motive, and details of the incident have not been disclosed. Laguna Woods, located about 80 km southeast of Los Angeles, has a population of approximately 18,000, with over 80% aged 65 or older. The shooting occurred in a religious complex area that includes a Catholic cathedral, Lutheran and Methodist churches, and a Jewish synagogue.
Meanwhile, in Houston, Texas, a shooting at a flea market resulted in two deaths and three injuries. The Harris County Sheriff's Office reported that five people in their twenties got into a fight at the flea market and shot each other, fortunately without injuring bystanders.
