According to Buffalo police, the shooting suspect has been arrested and is in custody. The supermarket where the incident took place is located in a predominantly Black residential area north of downtown Buffalo. Buffalo police tweeted, "A shooting occurred at Tops on Jefferson Avenue," and added, "Drivers and residents are advised to avoid the nearby area."
A witness said, "I heard gunfire and saw smoke," and "Then I saw a man in military uniform shooting at people." The witness continued, "I heard him shooting at people, and three people were lying down," adding, "I didn't have a phone, so I just screamed, and someone called the police."

The witness also said it took less than two minutes for the police to arrive. He explained, "The suspect had the gun to his head and chin but dropped it, took off his bulletproof vest, and was arrested while kneeling."
