Nominee Ki-sik Lee for Military Manpower Administration Chief... Key Figure in Iraq Supply Transport
[Asia Economy Military Specialist Yang Nak-gyu] Lee Gi-sik (65), the newly appointed Commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration, is famous for having conducted an operation to transport combat supplies from Korea to near Iraq for the Zaytun Unit, which was deployed to Iraq, during his time as a ship captain. In particular, he frequently appeared in the media during the Cheonan ship sinking incident when he served as the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Intelligence Operations Department.
Lee, the new commissioner and the first naval general to serve as the head of the Military Manpower Administration, is from Seosan, Chungnam, graduated from Yeouido High School, and was commissioned in 1981 as part of the 35th class of the Korea Naval Academy.
He served as captain of the ROKS Gwanggaeto the Great, commander of the 36th Squadron, 51st Squadron, and 5th Flotilla, as well as Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters, Commander of the 2nd Fleet, Superintendent of the Korea Naval Academy, and Director of Military Support at the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After serving as the Naval Operations Commander from 2015 to 2016, he retired as a lieutenant general.
During President Yoon Seok-yeol’s presidential campaign, he participated in the "Defense Forum with the People," which was mainly composed of personnel from the campaign team.
