Inevitable Blow Expected in June Local Elections
Leadership Bowed Heads at Chungnam Opening Ceremony
"Blame the Democratic Party for Park Wan-joo's Mistakes"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The Democratic Party of Korea decided on the 12th to expel lawmaker Park Wan-joo, who has been embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct. Within the party, there are concerns that this could negatively impact the upcoming local elections in June. In response, the party leadership has actively issued apologies and begun damage control.
A Democratic Party official said in a phone interview that day, "Since this incident broke out just before the local elections, it is expected to have a considerable impact on the elections." He added, "However, the party's fate depends on how the leadership handles the situation going forward. Expelling lawmaker Park and quickly issuing an apology message was the right move."
Another official expressed discomfort, saying, "It is frustrating that such unfortunate scandals keep occurring one after another."
In fact, the party leadership is fully committed to managing the aftermath. Yoon Ho-jung, co-chair of the Emergency Response Committee, said at the opening ceremony of the election office for Chungnam Governor candidate Yang Seung-jo, "Today, lawmaker Park, who has worked with us in legislative activities and is from this region, was expelled from the party due to an unfortunate incident." He bowed his head and sincerely apologized, saying, "We deeply apologize to the citizens and residents who had expected good politics and a good image from us."
He also tried to dispel concerns about the impact on the Chungcheong region elections. He said, "Please blame the Democratic Party for lawmaker Park's wrongdoing," and added, "In this local election, we ask the residents of Chungnam and citizens of Cheonan to blame the Democratic Party's mistakes but to choose Governor Yang, who has worked hard."
Co-chair Park Ji-hyun also bowed her head and said, "I apologize on behalf of the party."
Chungnam Governor candidate Yang Seung-jo said, "To the residents and comrades, I have no words even if I had a hundred mouths, and I apologize with a bowed head and a repentant heart," adding, "Please raise the disciplinary stick."
