View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Cellist Jang Hanna is embarking on a full-fledged conductor career as she takes on the role of principal guest conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra in Germany.
On the 6th (local time), the Hamburg Symphony announced on its website that Jang Hanna will serve as the orchestra's principal guest conductor starting this September.
Guest conductors of the Hamburg Symphony include Swiss conductors Charles Dutoit and Finnegan Downie Dear.
Jang Hanna, the only disciple of the world-renowned cellist Mischa Maisky, will conduct Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 and other pieces at the Hamburg Symphony's morning concert on December 4th, performing alongside her mentor. In March next year, she is scheduled to conduct Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 and more.
Sylvain Cambreling, principal conductor of the Hamburg Symphony, stated, "I am confident that outstanding and vibrant conductors like Jang Hanna and Charles Dutoit will bring us great joy."
Jang Hanna also said, "Becoming the principal guest conductor of the Hamburg Symphony is a great joy for me, and I look forward to this musical adventure."
Jang Hanna made a dazzling debut in the global music scene as a cellist by becoming the youngest winner of the Rostropovich Competition at age 11 in 1994. After officially debuting as a conductor in 2007, she has conducted the Liverpool Philharmonic, Naples Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Istanbul Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and others. In 2013, she served as music director of the Qatar Philharmonic and led their debut at the BBC Proms. In 2015, she was named one of the 'Top 19 Female Conductors Today' by the UK classical magazine BBC Music Magazine.
