'Original World Star' Kang Soo-yeon Passes Away at 55
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] Actress Kang Soo-yeon passed away around 3 p.m. on the 7th while receiving hospital treatment for a cerebral hemorrhage. She was 55 years old.
According to the police and fire authorities on the 7th, Kang was found in a state of cardiac arrest at her home in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, around 5:14 p.m. on the 5th. She received treatment at the hospital but ultimately did not regain consciousness and passed away.
Kang began acting as a child actress exclusively for Dongyang Broadcasting at the age of 3 in 1969. She gained popularity with the 1983 drama "High School Student Diary" and grew into a world star by winning the Best Actress award at the Venice International Film Festival for the film "The Surrogate Woman" (1987) directed by master director Im Kwon-taek, becoming the first East Asian actress to receive the honor.
She continued her active career, leaving behind over 40 films, enjoying her heyday to the extent that her appearances in films such as "The Road to Racetrack" (1991), "Blue in You" (1992), and "A Promise" (1996) were considered a box office guarantee.
She also received great love for her role as Jung Nan-jung, the protagonist of the SBS drama "Ladies of the Palace," and won the SBS Drama Award that year alongside Jeon In-hwa.
Recently, she completed filming the Netflix original sci-fi movie "Jung-E" (working title) directed by Yeon Sang-ho and was set to return to the screen in January this year, but it became her posthumous work.
The funeral will be held as a film industry funeral. The film industry plans to form a funeral committee for the film industry funeral with former Busan International Film Festival chairman Kim Dong-ho as the chairman. Directors Lee Woo-seok, Im Kwon-taek, Jung Jin-young, and actors Kim Ji-mi, Park Jeong-ja, Park Joong-hoon, Son Sook, and Ahn Sung-ki will serve as advisors.
