SK Rent-a-Car Launches Industry-First 'Polestar 2' Rental Product... "Deploying 30 Units"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] SK Rent-a-Car is expanding new electric vehicle usage experiences on Jeju Island, a popular tourist destination.
On the 6th, SK Rent-a-Car announced that it will be the first in the industry to offer the Swedish high-performance premium electric vehicle brand Polestar’s ‘Polestar 2’ at its Jeju branch as a short-term rental car product for travelers.
Since its first domestic launch in January, the Polestar 2 surpassed 4,000 pre-orders within a week and was selected as the ‘Electric Sedan of the Year’ at the ‘EV Awards 2022’ hosted by the Ministry of Environment in March, receiving high praise for its performance and design. The Polestar 2 model operated at SK Rent-a-Car’s Jeju branch is the Long Range Single Motor trim, which is highly preferred, chosen by over 90% of actual buyers. It can travel up to 417 km on a single charge, allowing ample driving for a full round trip around Jeju Island (approximately 250 km).
Additionally, it includes the Plus Package and Pilot Package options. A patented ventilated subwoofer is installed in the rear wheel housing outside the vehicle to minimize external noise. A total of 13 Harman Kardon premium speakers enhance the in-car music immersion, adding to the emotional experience of traveling in Jeju. It also features various convenience functions such as ‘Pilot Assist’ to help maintain lane centering and a ‘360-degree camera view’ to assist parking in tight spaces, allowing users to experience safe driving features.
Currently, the electric vehicles operated at SK Rent-a-Car’s Jeju branch include Hyundai’s ‘Ioniq 5’ and ‘Kona’, Kia’s ‘EV6’ and ‘Niro’, and Tesla’s ‘Model 3’. They have newly introduced 30 units of the ‘Polestar 2’. Through this, they plan to offer diverse options to customers wishing to use electric vehicles and continuously expand the electric vehicle usage experience.
Furthermore, SK Rent-a-Car provides fully charged electric vehicles at the Jeju branch and offers customers a card that allows free use of about 1,000 electric vehicle chargers operated by ‘Happy Charger’ at major attractions across Jeju Island, reducing customers’ charging costs and enhancing satisfaction.
Meanwhile, SK Rent-a-Car, which operates the largest short-term rental car business in Jeju, announced plans last June to create the largest electric vehicle-exclusive complex in Korea. They are sequentially converting their fleet of about 3,000 internal combustion engine vehicles to various latest electric vehicles domestically and internationally by 2025. The aim is to provide abundant electric vehicle usage experiences to customers in Jeju, the most visited destination in Korea, and support the upcoming eco-friendly mobility lifestyle.
