Embezzled Funds Invested in Derivative Products and Brother's Business
[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] The police have requested an arrest warrant for a Woori Bank employee accused of embezzling 61.4 billion won of company funds.
Seoul Namdaemun Police Station announced on the 29th at around 4:10 PM that they had applied to the prosecution for an arrest warrant for Woori Bank employee Mr. A. The pre-arrest suspect interrogation (warrant substantive examination) is expected to take place as early as the morning of the 30th.
Mr. A, who worked in Woori Bank's Corporate Improvement Department, is suspected of embezzling 61.4 billion won of company funds in three instances in 2012, 2015, and 2018. Woori Bank filed a complaint against Mr. A on the 27th, and Mr. A surrendered to the police and was urgently detained that same afternoon. The embezzled funds are known to be part of the deposit related to the failed sale of Daewoo Electronics. Woori Bank had previously overseen the sale of Daewoo Electronics, but when the contract was canceled, it is reported that Mr. A embezzled part of the confiscated funds.
Currently, the police have detected clues that some of the embezzled funds flowed into a business run by Mr. A's younger brother and are tracking the flow of funds. It is reported that the police have secured records of money transfers from Mr. A's account to his brother's account.
During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he withdrew all the embezzled money, invested some in derivatives, and invested some in his brother's business, but the business did not do well.

Mr. B faces the same charges of embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes as Mr. A. The police plan to apply for an arrest warrant for Mr. A's younger brother soon.
