[AKYUNG Poll] Lee Jae-myung's Move to Yeouido, 57.8% "Oppose"
Concerns Over Excessive Early Moves
Opposition Higher Across All Age Groups
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] More than half of Gyeonggi Province residents oppose Lee Jae-myung, the Standing Adviser of the Democratic Party of Korea, running in the June by-election for the National Assembly. This is interpreted as concerns over what is seen as an excessively early political move, given that not much time has passed since the recent presidential election defeat.
According to a public opinion poll commissioned by Asia Economy to Realmeter, conducted on the 27th and 28th among 1,010 men and women aged 18 or older residing in Gyeonggi Province (90% mobile, 10% landline, automated response), 35.5% responded that they ‘support’ former Governor Lee’s candidacy in the Gyeonggi by-election (26.6% strongly support, 8.9% somewhat support), while 57.8% said they ‘oppose’ it (48.0% strongly oppose, 9.8% somewhat oppose).
Within the party, there has been speculation about Lee’s possible run for party leader at the Democratic Party’s national convention in August, with running in the June 1 by-election considered one of the options for his political comeback timing. The rationale is that to fully consolidate party leadership, it is essential to enter the National Assembly and expand the parliamentary faction to exert influence. However, on the other hand, concerns have been raised about the burden of the recent presidential election loss and the excessively early political move, leading to apprehension about a June return.
By age group, opposition was high across all groups, including 20s (51.7%), 30s (54.5%), 40s (50.6%), and 50s (51.7%), with the highest opposition among those aged 60 and above at 74.8%. Regionally, opposition rates were higher than support in all areas: Southern region (57.3%), Southwestern region (56.1%), Eastern region (61.9%), and Northern region (56.4%).
