A Worker in His 60s Dies at Hwaseong City Construction Site... Serious Accident Act Under Review
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo Mideum] A man in his 60s died after being pierced by construction materials at a residential apartment construction site in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 22nd, around 11:30 a.m. that day, Mr. A, a subcontractor worker in his 60s, was pierced by construction materials while assembling wall formwork at a residential apartment construction site in Songsan-myeon, Hwaseong, and died.
It is preliminarily understood that Mr. A lost his balance and fell while installing a formwork safety hook on a scaffold about 1 meter high, and was pierced by protruding rebar on the floor, resulting in his death.
The police are investigating whether there were any safety violations before the accident by interviewing witnesses and site personnel.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor has ordered a work stoppage at the construction site where the accident occurred and is investigating whether there were violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act or the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
The accident occurred at a construction site building about 250 terrace houses. The total construction cost is 45 billion KRW, and the number of regular workers exceeds 50, making it subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.

The Serious Accidents Punishment Act applies to construction sites with a project cost of 5 billion KRW or more or workplaces with 50 or more regular workers, where management officials are found to have failed to properly fulfill their safety and health obligations.
