Hyundai Motor Group Wins 17 Main Awards at the 2022 iF Design Awards
Major Wins at the World's Top 3 Design Awards 'iF Design Award'
Hyundai Staria, Kia EV6, Genesis GV60 Showcase Design Excellence in Product Category
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, and Genesis have once again demonstrated world-class design competitiveness by winning 17 main awards at the ‘2022 iF Design Awards’ hosted by the German International Forum Design.
The iF Design Award, considered one of the world’s top three design awards alongside Germany’s ‘Red Dot’ and the United States’ ‘IDEA,’ has been selecting and announcing outstanding designs in various categories annually since 1954. This year, Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, and Genesis achieved the remarkable feat of receiving 17 design awards across five categories: ▲Product ▲Professional Concept ▲Interior Architecture ▲Communication ▲User Interface.
In the product category, Hyundai Motor’s Staria, Kia’s EV6, and Genesis’s GV60 were among the winners. The Staria is a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) that first applied Hyundai Motor’s future mobility design theme, ‘Inside Out.’ Its sleek curves reminiscent of a spaceship, spacious interior, and sense of openness harmonize to create a user-centered emotional space.
The EV6 is Kia’s first dedicated electric vehicle model reflecting Kia’s new design philosophy, ‘Opposites United’ (creative fusion of contrasting concepts). It won the main award for its design, featuring the ‘Digital Tiger Face,’ a reinterpretation of Kia’s iconic Tiger Nose front design adapted for electric vehicles, and the driver-centric, widely arranged ‘Panoramic Curved Display.’ The EV6 followed its ‘2022 Red Dot Award’ wins for ‘Product Design’ Best of the Best and ‘Innovative Product’ main award by also receiving the iF Design Award.
Genesis’s first E-GMP-based luxury electric vehicle, the GV60, applied a coupe-style crossover utility vehicle (CUV) design based on Genesis’s design identity of ‘Dynamic Elegance.’ It completed a sleek and dynamic high-performance electric vehicle image while adding luxury by emphasizing the ‘beauty of empty space.’
Hyundai Motor’s lifestyle brand ‘Hyundai Collection’ also won awards in the product category for the ‘Portable Pet House,’ ‘Trip Cart,’ and ‘Ultra-light Magnetic Umbrella.’ The Portable Pet House is a pet carrier applying the ISOFIX seat fixing device used in child car seats. The Trip Cart, created in collaboration with the tripwear specialist brand ‘Lowraw,’ serves as both a picnic table and a mobile cart. It is made using automotive waste and discarded PET bottles.
Additionally, the product category awards included the Geonic, featuring a three-dimensional design with hybrid fabric co-developed with Kolon and applied to the EV6; the Bang & Olufsen sound system installed in the GV60; and the Genesis electric vehicle wireless charging system reflecting the Genesis brand design. In the Professional Concept category, which honors experimental and innovative designs, ‘Concept Car Seven’ and the ‘Ioniq 5-based Robotaxi’ received awards.
In the Interior Architecture category, ‘Hyundai Motorstudio Busan,’ ‘IAA Mobility 2021 Hyundai Motor Exhibition Hall,’ ‘Kia EV6 Unplugged Ground,’ and ‘Genesis Re:Create Special Exhibition’ were honored. Additionally, in the Communication category, Hyundai Motor’s Sustainability Report won an award, and in the User Interface category, Kia’s EV Infotainment System was recognized.
A Hyundai Motor Group official stated, “This award is the result of the passion and effort of designers and engineers to realize dreams,” adding, “We will continue to focus our capabilities not only on technology but also on design, from products to brand communication, to create differentiated customer experiences.”
