View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Recently, as delivery fees have surged sharply on major delivery applications (apps), convenience stores have begun targeting niche markets through pickup services. This method involves selling and receiving sashimi, chicken, pizza, and more at the convenience store closest to home, gaining great popularity among consumers looking to save on delivery fees.
According to CU on the 22nd, the number of sashimi pickup service uses increased by about 10% from the first week of its launch during the period from the 14th to the 20th. Last month, CU partnered with the seafood specialty distribution platform In-eo Gyoju Haejeokdan to introduce the pickup service. It is currently being piloted at about 20 stores in Gangnam-gu and Seocho-gu, Seoul, with plans to gradually expand the service area.
For this service, if an order is placed before 12 PM, sashimi can be picked up at a nearby convenience store after 5 PM. Customers purchase products at CU-affiliated stores within the In-eo Gyoju Haejeokdan app and select convenience store pickup. Then, they present the order number receipt message to the store staff. Products not picked up by 10 PM on the same day are automatically collected the next day.
Pickup services for ready-to-eat foods such as chicken and pizza are also expanding at convenience stores. CU operates chicken pickup services at over 7,000 stores and pizza pickup services at about 1,200 stores, selling around 30 types of chicken and 3 types of pizza. GS25 offers the Chicken25 pickup service at over 4,500 stores, handling about 40 types of products. Sales of the Chicken25 pickup service increased about 17 times from the initial launch period between the 1st and 19th of this month. At Seven Eleven, chicken pickup services are available at over 4,000 stores nationwide, and Emart24 is also operating ready-to-eat food pickup services at some locations.
