[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Chung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, met with Ahn Cheol-soo, Chairman of the Presidential Transition Committee, on the 8th and said, "We will strengthen the future mobility industry ecosystem and contribute to transforming South Korea into a global innovation nation."
Chairman Chung conveyed this message while welcoming Chairman Ahn and the transition committee members who visited Namyang Research Center, the group's R&D hub. He stated, "The automotive industry is evolving into a new mobility industry by converging with advanced future technologies such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and hydrogen fuel cells, and by integrating with the service industry," adding, "In the future, the mobility industry is expected to lead the future of national industries."

The visit was made to share the current status of eco-friendly vehicles and future mobility development with the new government and to discuss plans for advancing related industries and nurturing talent. Along with Chairman Ahn, Im I-ja, Secretary of the Social Welfare and Culture Division, Choi Sang-mok, Secretary of the Economic Division 1, Kim So-young, Economic Division 1 transition committee member, Yoo Woong-hwan, Economic Division 2 transition committee member, Nam Ki-tae, Science and Technology Education Division transition committee member, Shin Yong-hyun, spokesperson, and Han Mu-kyung, member of the People Power Party, visited the research center. From Hyundai Motor Group, Chairman Chung was joined by Park Jung-guk, Head of R&D, Gong Young-woon, President of Strategic Planning, and Ji Young-so, President of Open Innovation.
Upon arrival at the research center, Chairman Ahn rode with Chairman Chung in Hyundai's autonomous vehicle, the Solati Robo Shuttle, to the Hyundai Design Center. This vehicle applies Level 4 autonomous driving core technology capable of perceiving and judging driving situations and controlling the vehicle. It conducted pilot services last year in Sejong City and is currently being tested at the autonomous driving testbed in Namyang Research Center. It is reported that Chairman Ahn, who has a keen interest in autonomous driving technology, personally experienced the ride.

View original imageThe transition committee members entered the event hall guided by Spot, the robotic dog. This robotic dog is a quadruped robot from Boston Dynamics, acquired by Hyundai and others. It was deployed in automotive production sites last year to handle safety management tasks and is also used in firefighting scenes in the United States. They also experienced demonstrations of key technologies including robotics such as wearable robots, virtual reality experiences, AAM, Ioniq 5 robotaxi, and electric vehicles. They rode hydrogen vehicles Nexo and Xcient as well as various electric vehicles, listened to explanations about the research center and future technology development status, and exchanged opinions.
Chairman Ahn said, "The future mobility industry can be a national strategic industry succeeding semiconductors and smartphones that sustain South Korea's economy and a core element in building a science and technology-centered nation," adding, "In the future, I will visit any meaningful science and technology site regardless of whether it is a large, medium, or small enterprise."
