View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] Park Ji-hyun, co-chair of the Emergency Response Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea, directly criticized some candidates who have registered as preliminary candidates for the local elections, asking, "Is the Democratic Party really a party that lost the presidential election? Are you ready to reflect and take responsibility?" The remarks were interpreted as targeting former party leader Song Young-gil, who recently registered as a preliminary candidate, lawmaker Park Joo-min, who was the main proposer of the three lease laws, and former presidential chief of staff Noh Young-min, who was involved in the controversy over the sale of houses in Banpo, Seoul, and Cheongju, Chungbuk.
At the Emergency Response Committee meeting held at the National Assembly on the 8th, Park began by saying, "People who disappointed the public with real estate issues have registered as preliminary candidates in the June 1 local election for metropolitan mayor positions, which closed yesterday. The former party leader who resigned taking responsibility for the presidential election defeat also registered."
Park said, "Looking at the list of preliminary candidates received, I could not help but deeply ponder whether reflection and reform are really possible within the Democratic Party," emphasizing, "We must seriously reflect on whether the benevolence that overlooks wrong choices because we know each other well is pushing the Democratic Party back into the swamp of defeat."
Regarding some candidates running in the local elections mentioning Senior Advisor Lee Jae-myung, she pointed out, "Many candidates are doing 'Lee Jae-myung marketing' to create favorable rules for nominations. We are currently holding an election, not a contest to see who is closer to Lee Jae-myung."
Park also stated, "While it is natural to stand against unjust power to protect the party’s precious political assets, using this as a marketing strategy is inappropriate," and clarified, "The Democratic Party is neither a private faction of any individual nor a party created to protect someone."
Addressing former leader Song, she said, "Some speculate that Song’s candidacy is a creation of Senior Advisor Lee Jae-myung, but I do not think so. What the advisor supports is fair competition, not a specific candidate."
She then urged the party’s Public Office Candidate Recommendation Management Committee, "For party reform and victory in the local elections, please conduct a nomination that listens to the public sentiment from the presidential election with a heart willing to make painful sacrifices, and carry out reform nominations that escape benevolence."
