Fortune Teller Who Committed Fraud Over a Hundred Million Won Sentenced to Prison
"To Clear Corruption, You Must Catch a Black Dog and Chew It Raw"... Court Sentences 1 Year 4 Months Imprisonment
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] A shaman who deceived victims into believing that misfortune would occur unless they performed exorcisms or rituals, and embezzled over 100 million won, has been sentenced to prison.
The Supreme Court's 3rd Division (Presiding Justice Kim Jae-hyung) announced on the 7th that it upheld the original sentence of 1 year and 4 months imprisonment in the final appeal trial of shaman A (36), who was prosecuted on charges including fraud.
A was prosecuted on charges of falsely telling victims in April 2017 that misfortune would happen if they did not perform shamanistic acts, and received a total of 120 million won over 139 occasions until January 2019.
It was investigated that A demanded costs from victims by saying, "To dispel bad luck, you must catch a black dog and chew it raw." A used the money received from victims for living expenses, credit card payments, purchasing game items, shopping, and entertainment.

The first and second trials stated, "The defendant vaguely claimed to have performed legitimate shamanistic acts for the victims but has not made any particular effort to restore the damage nor received forgiveness, so a severe punishment is necessary," and sentenced A to 1 year and 4 months imprisonment. The Supreme Court also agreed with the lower courts' judgment.
