Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Obtains Basic Approval for Ultra-Large Liquefied Carbon Dioxide Carrier
"Decarbonization and Carbon Capture Technology Advances... Increased Demand for Carbon Dioxide Carriers"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced on the 7th that it has obtained the Approval in Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a 70,000㎥ class ultra-large liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier.
With the global expansion of decarbonization policies and advancements in carbon capture technology, interest in transporting liquefied carbon dioxide by ship is increasing. Since the existing small LCO2 carriers of 1,000 to 2,000㎥ used in the food industry have limitations in meeting the demands of the carbon capture market, demand for ultra-large LCO2 carriers is expanding.
Daewoo Shipbuilding's LCO2 carrier is 260 meters long and 44 meters wide, making it the largest among LCO2 carriers certified by classification societies. It is equipped with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion engine and secures sufficient space to install onboard carbon dioxide capture and storage equipment to comply with various environmental regulations.
In this certification, Daewoo Shipbuilding's cargo hold design and cargo management system were confirmed to meet the ABS classification rules as well as the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s IGC Code. The IGC Code refers to international regulations concerning the construction and equipment of bulk liquefied gas carriers.
Furthermore, Daewoo Shipbuilding is reportedly developing new ship designs to improve operational efficiency for shipowners by developing new materials for liquefied carbon dioxide storage tanks and expanding tank capacity.
