Gyeongbuk Pohang-si Selected for 'Smart City' Contest Project ... Building an Intelligent Future-Oriented City
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, was recently selected consecutively for the government’s ‘Smart City’ creation contest projects.
A Smart City is a project that utilizes Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence (AI) to solve urban problems like traffic and environment and to build cutting-edge infrastructure. It refers to a ‘smart future-oriented city’ that enhances the quality of life by providing citizen safety and convenience, thereby increasing urban sustainability.
The city has solidified its position as a ‘smart specialized city’ by being consecutively selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘Smart City Challenge,’ the Ministry of Environment’s ‘Smart Green City,’ and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ ‘Smart Aquaculture Cluster’ creation contest projects.
Recently, Pohang was finally selected as the top winner in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘2022 Smart City Challenge Main Project’ contest, securing 10 billion KRW in national funding.
Last year, the city was selected as a preliminary project site for this initiative and demonstrated four major services in the traffic and safety sectors, including ‘road surface detection,’ until February.
In the main project, various services will be built focusing on four themes: urban management, safety, traffic, and data platforms. The city plans to promote the data industry by integrating and opening urban, public, and private data collected through the project.
