Jeonju City Breaks Ground on Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium Near Jeonju World Cup Stadium
A Total Project Cost of 52.2 Billion Won Invested to Build a Multipurpose Sports Facility for Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, and More
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] On the 29th, Jeonju City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium near Jeonju World Cup Stadium on Hyeoksin-ro, Deokjin-gu, attended by former Jeonju Mayor Kim Seung-su, Jeonju City Council Chairman Kang Dong-hwa, and Jeon Chang-jin, coach of Jeonju KCC Egis.
The indoor gymnasium construction project will involve a total budget of 52.2 billion KRW, with a site area of 21,186㎡ and a total floor area of 19,078㎡. The multipurpose gymnasium will have one basement floor and three above-ground floors, with a seating capacity of 6,000.
Jeonju City plans to start full-scale construction beginning with demolition work and complete the project by December next year.
The new indoor gymnasium will be the only indoor gymnasium in the Jeonbuk region capable of hosting various domestic and international sports events such as basketball, volleyball, handball, badminton, and gymnastics.
In particular, it is expected to provide citizens with opportunities to enjoy sports and invigorate the local economy by attracting various domestic and international sports competitions.
Prior to this, the city selected a design proposal titled "On (蘊) Gyeong (景)" through a design competition for the new Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium, and recently completed the detailed design through the Ecological City Committee, Public Design Committee, and meetings with related parties.
Jeonju Mayor Kim Seung-su emphasized, "Once the Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium is newly built and relocated to meet international certification standards capable of hosting various international competitions, Jeonju citizens will be able to watch professional basketball KCC home games and various international competitions more comfortably and safely." He added, "We will develop the area around Jeonju World Cup Stadium into a space where citizens can enjoy diverse sports welfare and a hub of South Korea's sports industry."
