Jeonnam Fire Department Intensifies Spring 'Mountain Accident Safety Measures' Initiatives
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Jeonnam Fire Headquarters announced on the 29th that it will implement the ‘2022 Mountain Accident Safety Measures’ until May to prevent safety accidents and ensure rapid rescue for spring hikers.
This safety measure was promoted to prevent mountain accidents among hikers and establish a rapid rescue response system in spring, when the number of hikers increases due to warmer weather.
In the past three years, mountain accidents in the province occurred 383 times in 2019, 396 times in 2020, and 405 times in 2021. Among these, accidents occurring in spring (March to May) totaled 312 cases, accounting for 26.4%.
By type, general distress was the most frequent with 292 cases (24.7%), followed by slips and falls with 184 cases (16.8%), exhaustion and dehydration with 97 cases (8.2%), and personal illness with 91 cases (7.7%).
The Jeonnam Fire Department operates ‘Mountain Safety Keepers’ composed of firefighters, volunteer firefighters, and volunteers on major hiking trails in each city and county, conducting mobile patrols in accident-prone and high-risk areas, providing safety hiking guidance and promotion, and inspecting safety facilities.
