Jeonju City Breaks Ground on Healing Garden Forest to Mend Seonmi Village Wounds
This Year, 250 Million KRW Invested to Develop Seonmi Village Garden Forest
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] A "Garden Forest" to heal the wounds of residents will be created in Seonmi Village, Jeonju City, which has transformed from a red-light district into a cultural and artistic village.
On the 28th, Jeonju City held a spring flower planting event at the memorial space, a city garden in Seonmi Village, attended by about 40 people including Jeonju Mayor Kim Seung-su, members of the Seonmi Village Maintenance Public-Private Council, Green Gardeners, Citizen Gardeners, and village residents.
The Seonmi Village Garden Forest Creation Project has a total budget of 250 million KRW and focuses on creating gardens along sections of Girindaero, Gwonsamdeuk-ro, Mulwangmeol 2-gil, the Human Rights Space (City Garden), the Memorial Space (City Garden), and the Unexpected Art Museum area alleys.
The memorial space, where the planting event was held, will be planted with plants such as Cornus officinalis, Hydrangea, Ptilotus, Heuchera, and Gaura, and will be used as a communal space for village residents.
Jeonju City expects that through the creation of the garden forest, street gardens and alley gardens throughout Seonmi Village will transform the once dark and shaded alleys into warm spaces where people gather and residents unite.
Mayor Kim Seung-su of Jeonju emphasized, “Seonmi Village, which was a space closed off to citizens and forgotten for a long time, is transforming into Seonosong Art Village and approaching the citizens. Through garden creation and the spread of garden culture, we will heal the painful wounds of the red-light district and recreate it as a space for citizens.”
