Gangneung City and Korail announced on the 27th that "the KTX train running between Haengsin Station in Goyang City, Seoul Station, and Gangneung Station will operate starting from the 31st."
As a result, residents of Goyang City will be able to use the direct train to Gangneung from Haengsin Station without transferring at Seoul Station.
The KTX Gangneung Line is expected to enhance transportation convenience for citizens in the northwestern region of Gyeonggi Province and create a synergy effect for the development of East Coast tourism.
With domestic travel demand gradually increasing as an alternative to limited overseas travel, the Gangwon-do Tourism Foundation launched a new tourism product this month called "Workcation," a new work style and travel trend that combines 'Work' and 'Vacation' at vacation spots.
Additionally, accommodations participating in the Workcation program cover all 18 cities and counties in the province and are structured as products for stays of two or more nights on weekdays (Sunday to Thursday) to suit the purpose of Workcation.
According to the Korea Tourism Data Lab, the most visited major tourist destination in Gangneung over the past three years (2019?2022) is Gyeongpo Beach.
Following that are Jumunjin Port, Jumunjin Fish Market, Anmok Beach (Coffee Street), and Jungang Market. Other notable places include Gangmun Beach, the filming location of Dokkaebi (Yeongjin Beach), and Jeongdongjin.
In particular, the Arte Museum in Gangneung has established itself as a major tourist attraction since its opening at the end of December last year, attracting an average of 3,500 visitors per day and up to 6,500 visitors at peak times.
The Arte Museum recorded a rapid rise in ranking and ranked 9th in search rankings within Gangwon Province. It is preparing media art-based tourism marketing targeting not only the MZ generation but all age groups.
Also, the representative keywords for popular restaurants in the Gangneung area were most frequently searched as 'Sundubu' (soft tofu stew) and 'coffee,' followed by Jang Kalguksu (spicy knife-cut noodles), cockles, Jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), bread, and Mulhoe (cold raw fish soup).
Merchants in the Gangneung area expect that with improved accessibility and a greater number of popular restaurants compared to other regions, tourist visits will continue to increase.
Kim Hyung-ik, chairman of the Gangneung Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, "Until now, the KTX Gangneung Line only departed from Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni, but now it will also depart from Goyang in the northwest of Gyeonggi Province, so we expect the number of tourists to increase significantly."
Meanwhile, the train between Haengsin and Gangneung operates twice a day: the down train departs Haengsin at 7:33 AM and arrives in Gangneung at 10:01 AM, and the up train departs Gangneung at 9:28 PM and arrives at 11:49 PM.
