Legoland Korea 'First Reveal'... Completion Ceremony Held Ahead of May Opening
[Chuncheon=Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Legoland Korea Resort (hereinafter Legoland) held a completion ceremony on the 26th ahead of its opening on Children’s Day, May 5th.
The event, held in the afternoon at Legoland Korea Resort in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, was to commemorate the completion of Legoland, the 10th Legoland worldwide. Attendees included Nick Varney, CEO of Merlin Entertainment UK, the operator of Legoland Korea Resort; John Jacobson, President of Legoland; Choi Moon-soon, Governor of Gangwon Province; Lee Jae-soo, Mayor of Chuncheon; and local residents.
In his welcoming speech, CEO Nick Varney said, “First, I deeply thank the local community stakeholders who greatly helped bring Legoland Korea Resort to completion,” adding, “Legoland will strive to be a global theme park that brings joy and happiness to children and families, and also grow together with the local community.”
Following this, a “key handover ceremony” was held to celebrate the completion and official acquisition of Legoland Park. Yang Seung-mo, Executive Director responsible for the development of Legoland Korea Resort, handed over a specially made Lego key to Kim Young-pil, President of Legoland Korea Resort.
During a Q&A session with the press, President John Jacobson explained the unique features of Chuncheon Legoland, saying, “Among the 10 Legolands worldwide, Korea’s Legoland is located on an island in the most beautiful place,” and “We will also introduce the Lego Factory Adventure Ride for the first time in Asia.”
President Kim Young-pil also emphasized, “Although the start is modest, we expect 1.5 to 2 million visitors,” and “If customers who love Lego continue to show us their support, we expect to achieve these numbers soon.”
Regarding conflicts with residents over concerns such as damage to the Jungdo historic site, he stated, “We are fully aware of the concerns and are in close consultation with the relevant local governments.” CEO Nick Varney responded, “We do not forget that Jungdo is not the location of Legoland but an island belonging to the citizens of Chuncheon.”
Legoland, covering an area of 280,000 square meters, will feature a theme park with about 40 rides and attractions, along with the Legoland Hotel, which has 154 rooms. The main customer base will be children aged 2 to 12 and their families.
