Police and Ministry of Employment to Apply Serious Accident Act, Further Investigation to Follow"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] A man in his 60s died after falling while working at a construction site in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Seocho Police Station in Seoul, at around 12:30 PM on the 25th, Mr. A (65), who was performing painting work on the third basement floor of a complex facility under construction in Seocho-gu, fell 6 meters down to the fourth basement floor through a ventilation shaft. The worker was reported to be an employee of the primary contractor, not a subcontractor, and the construction company responsible for the project was confirmed to be a small-to-medium enterprise with sales in the 30 billion KRW range.
The fire department responded to the report at 1:16 PM and transported Mr. A to the hospital, but he passed away during treatment at 2:38 PM.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor immediately issued a work stoppage order upon learning of the accident.
The construction project is valued at approximately 6 billion KRW, which falls under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act (applicable to construction projects over 5 billion KRW), and an investigation will be conducted to determine whether there were violations of this law and the Industrial Safety and Health Act.

A police official stated, "The incident is confirmed to be true," and added, "We plan to respond jointly with the Ministry of Employment and Labor." A ministry official also said, "Since the construction amount exceeds 5 billion KRW, it is subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act," and "We plan to investigate whether there was any negligence during the supervision process."
