View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Amid the ongoing Omicron variant surge, the daily number of new COVID-19 cases reached approximately 340,000. Since the daily new cases first exceeded 300,000 on the 9th, the average daily cases have been over 370,000, but compared to last week when weekday daily cases ranged between 400,000 and 600,000, the rate of increase appears to have somewhat eased.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 25th, as of midnight, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 339,514 from the previous day, bringing the total cumulative confirmed cases to 11,162,232.
This figure is 56,084 fewer than the 395,598 cases reported the previous day and 67,382 fewer than the 406,896 cases reported a week ago on the 18th. Last week, when daily new cases hit a record high, the number of confirmed cases from Wednesday to Friday (16th to 18th) were 400,627 → 621,205 → 406,896, whereas this week on the same days (23rd to 25th), the numbers were 381,421 → 334,665 → 209,145, indicating a slight reduction in the scale of the outbreak.
However, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 remains close to 400, with 393 deaths reported yesterday alone. By age group, those aged 80 and above accounted for the highest number at 230, followed by 95 in their 70s, 49 in their 60s, 11 in their 50s, 4 in their 40s, 2 in their 30s, 1 in their 20s, and 1 in the 0-9 age group.
The total number of deaths over the past week since the 19th reached 2,513. The cumulative death toll to date is 14,294, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.13%.
The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized also increased from the previous day to 1,085, maintaining over 1,000 since the 8th of this month.
As of midnight, the nationwide intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy rate was 65.6% (1,854 out of 2,825 beds in use), up 1.0 percentage point from the previous day’s 64.6%. The occupancy rate for semi-intensive care beds, which treat patients whose condition is improving from critical or who are at high risk of worsening, was 69.1%.

The number of patients under home treatment was 1,888,775, an increase of 15,193 from the previous day’s 1,873,582. Among them, 277,170 are in the high-risk group aged 60 and above receiving health monitoring from home treatment management medical institutions, while the rest are managing their health independently at home.
