Gochang-gun Selected for Low-Carbon Rice Paddy Water Management Technology Demonstration Project
[Gochang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] On the 25th, Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk announced that it has been selected for the 'Low-Carbon Rice Paddy Water Management Technology Dissemination Pilot Project,' promoted as a public contest project by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
This project is being promoted to develop and spread excellent regional carbon reduction models through the development of reduction coefficients and the dissemination of paddy water management technology to reduce greenhouse gases (methane) generated during rice cultivation.
In Gochang-gun, the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Jeonbuk National University and Songam Organic Farming Cooperative Corporation will carry out the project with 54 farms over a rice cultivation area of 140 hectares in the Heungdeok-myeon area.
The total project cost of 400 million KRW (70% national funds, 17% provincial funds, 13% county funds) will be used for farmer education and consulting, compliance inspections, development of excellent reduction models, support for water channels and agricultural machinery and materials to implement low-carbon paddy water management technology.
Lee Gilsup, CEO of Songam Organic Farming Cooperative Corporation, received eco-friendly certification in 2009 for the 140-hectare rice cultivation area to produce safe food, and last year obtained low-carbon certification for the entire area to respond to the climate change crisis and preserve the environment.
Jo Usam, head of the Agricultural Life Support Division of the county, said, "We will do our best to ensure that this project is carried out smoothly so that an excellent carbon reduction model can be developed."
