The exhibition will be held from the 31st to August 14th at the Amorepacific Museum of Art in Yongsan, Seoul.
Andreas Gursky is a master of contemporary photography who has presented large-scale works containing deep insights into humanity and civilization. By capturing places symbolizing modern civilization such as skyscrapers, factories, apartments, and stock exchanges, he prompts reflection on the existence of individuals within vast societies.
This exhibition allows visitors to confirm the artist’s sublime aspiration, who has recorded facets of modern civilization through the depiction of people existing within vast spaces such as nature and architecture.
Gursky was born in Leipzig, Germany, and studied typological photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie D?sseldorf, who established the aesthetics and tradition of German contemporary photography.
Unlike his early works that captured surrounding landscapes with a calm gaze, since the 1990s he has been creating new scenes by combining and editing long-distance photographic images.
Referencing characteristics of abstract painting and minimalism sculpture, he gradually expands the conventional framework of photography through experimental works that transcend genre boundaries.
At this exhibition, the Amorepacific Museum of Art plans to showcase 47 works spanning over 40 years of Gursky’s career, including representative works such as Paris, Montparnasse (1993) and 99 Cent (1999, remastered 2009).
The exhibition space is divided into seven sections, each organized around major themes: “Manipulated Images,” “Art Historical References,” and “Sublime Aspiration.” Notably, Gursky’s new works being shown for the first time worldwide, Walking on Ice (2021) and Stripes (2022), will also be unveiled.
