Candidate Lee Donsung Announces Candidacy for Wanju County Governor in Jeonbuk
Promise to Become Jeonbuk's Top 4 City as a 'Leading Self-Sufficient City, Healthy Wanju'
[Wanju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Lee Don-seung, chairman of the Wanju Education Governance Committee, officially declared his candidacy along with his preliminary registration for the Wanju County Governor in the upcoming June 1 local elections.
After completing his candidate registration at the Wanju Election Commission on the 20th, Lee held consecutive press conferences on the 21st at the Jeonbuk Provincial Council and Wanju County Office briefing rooms, stating, “As I am fully prepared, if the residents give me the opportunity to work, I will dedicate myself to them as a ‘competent county governor.’”
Lee emphasized, “I have a deeper understanding of local issues than anyone else and have played a pivotal role in resolving regional challenges such as the nation’s first full free school meal program for elementary, middle, and high schools, reforming the Wanju County Sports Council, and changing the helicopter flight route of the Jeonju Aviation Battalion.” He added, “With a broad personal network and a solid communication system with the Democratic Party, I am confident that I am the right person to address the agenda of the 8th local government.”
Lee presented a blueprint titled ‘Top Self-Sufficient City, Healthy Wanju,’ emphasizing his goal to elevate Wanju County to become one of the four major cities in Jeonbuk Province.
His five visions include △ a top city preparing for city (si) status △ a self-sufficient economy that respects working people △ welfare where everyone is happy and smiling △ customized education that creates the future △ a healthy and safe living environment for all.
Key pledges include fostering towns (eup) with populations of 50,000, improving residents’ transportation rights through initiatives like a public bus system, establishing the Wanju County Facilities Management Corporation, creating new industrial and residential complexes, focusing on hydrogen industry development, and promoting Local Food 2.0.
Additionally, he pledged education policies such as designating education special zones, establishing a middle school in Sambong New Town, and installing an education officer directly under the county governor. He also promised to promptly resolve the Bibong Boeun landfill issue, establish the Wanju County Conflict Mediation Committee, create the Mangyeong River Five-Senses Satisfaction Trail, and develop a hub for recreational baseball.
Furthermore, Lee expressed his commitment to welfare pledges including building a senior citizens’ center, obtaining certification as a women-friendly city and establishing a newborn delivery infrastructure, implementing a cap on out-of-pocket medical expenses for children, constructing a sports center exclusively for the disabled, and supporting menstrual products for youth.
Born in 1959 in Gui, Lee has served as president of the student council at Jeonbuk National University, chairman of the Insurance Supervisory Service labor union, chairman of the labor union council for financial supervisory agencies (Bank of Korea, Securities Supervisory Service, Insurance Supervisory Service), administrative officer for President Kim Dae-jung’s transition committee, chairman of the Democratic Party’s venture business special committee, and planning committee member of the Democratic Party’s strategic planning committee. He also served as senior advisor to the Democratic Party candidate Ahn Ho-young’s campaign in the 20th general election and as general director of the Wanju County campaign headquarters for Democratic Party candidate Moon Jae-in in the 19th presidential election.
