Zelensky Speaks at Swiss Anti-War Protest... Urges Freezing of Russian Oligarchs' Accounts
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the 19th (local time) urged the Swiss federal government to freeze the accounts of Russian oligarchs.
According to major foreign media, President Zelensky participated via video in an anti-war protest held in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, on the same day, saying, "This is also a fight against evil." He emphasized that "Ukrainian cities are being destroyed under the orders of those who live in beautiful Swiss villages and enjoy their wealth," and that their privileges must be taken away.
Earlier last month, Switzerland broke its tradition as a military neutral country and imposed sanctions such as freezing assets and banning entry of key Russian figures, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, President Zelensky appears to be arguing that more sanctions targets should be included to further pressure Russia.
Thousands of protesters gathered in front of the parliament where President Zelensky’s speech took place, waving Ukrainian flags and applauding in response to his remarks.
