Gyeongsangnam-do held the groundbreaking ceremony for the National Gaya History and Culture Center on the 18th through the National Gaya Cultural Heritage Research Institute.
The National Gaya History and Culture Center is planned to be built as a complex cultural space with multifunctional facilities including a museum, library, and data storage, serving as a hub institution for the continuous preservation and utilization of Gaya relics.
With a total national budget of 29.5 billion KRW invested, the center will be constructed on a site area of 6,000㎡, with a total floor area of 10,095㎡, consisting of one basement floor and three above-ground floors. It will include spaces for excavation record registration and storage, excavation artifact storage, conservation treatment rooms, and record reading rooms.
The storage space will house various excavation records, reports, artifacts, and literary materials related to Gaya, which will be received, preserved, treated, and digitized for storage.
The research and academic spaces will host research work, academic conferences, and public lectures, while the exhibition and experience spaces will provide access to Gaya’s historical and cultural materials for viewing and interactive experiences.
The institute stated that after the construction of the center is completed in September next year, additional construction of exhibition spaces and preparation for operation will follow, with plans to open by the end of 2024.
Gyeongnam Province said, “We are pleased to have repeatedly proposed to the Cultural Heritage Administration the necessity of an institution capable of successfully carrying out the Gaya history restoration project and comprehensively handling history, as well as the proposed site for construction.”
A city official said, “We will focus on establishing the identity of Gimhae as the ancient capital of Geumgwan Gaya and a historical and cultural city with a 2,000-year-old tradition,” adding, “We will further solidify our position as the central city of the Gaya cultural zone by finalizing the UNESCO World Heritage registration of the Gaya tumulus cluster.”
