Appointment Ceremony for 166 New Police Lieutenants and Captains... Moon: "Police Are the Face of the Nation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] On the 17th, the Korean National Police University held an appointment ceremony for 166 individuals, including the 38th class of the Police University, the 70th class of the Inspector Open Competitive Recruitment (formerly Cadet Candidates), and the 9th class of Career Competitive Recruitment (Lawyers) at the Police University in Asan, Chungnam. The 38th class of Police University students consists of 99 people in total, with 86 men and 13 women; the 70th class of Inspector Open Competitive Recruitment includes 50 people, with 35 men and 15 women; and the Career Competitive Recruitment lawyers include 17 people, with 14 men and 3 women.
The appointment ceremony was held with approximately 250 attendees, including 30 guests such as President Moon Jae-in and First Lady Kim Jung-sook, and 166 appointees, in consideration of COVID-19 prevention guidelines. It was broadcast live via the National Broadcasting Service (KTV) and the Police University’s social media channels. In his congratulatory speech, President Moon said, "The police are the face of the nation that citizens in need of help meet first," and urged, "You must acquire the qualities and capabilities to confidently face any situation through relentless training and education."
President Moon awarded the Presidential Award to Inspector Seo Yeon-jun (23), the top student of the Police University’s 38th class, and Inspector Seo Young-woo (26), the top scorer among the Inspector Open Competitive Recruitment class. Inspector Seo Yeon-jun stated, "I will become a reliable police officer who can protect citizens’ lives and socially vulnerable groups in any situation," while Inspector Seo Young-woo said, "I will carefully analyze each case to realize social justice."

Previously, the Police University began joint appointment ceremonies for Police University students and Inspector Open Competitive Recruitment in 2015, and since 2020, it has also held appointment ceremonies including career competitive recruits such as lawyers and accountants. Established in 1979 as a national university with a four-year regular college program, the Police University has produced 4,328 inspectors from its first graduating class in 1985 through the 38th graduating class this year. The Inspector Open Competitive Recruitment has appointed 4,700 inspectors since its first class in 1948, and the Career Competitive Recruitment lawyers have produced 174 superintendents since the first recruitment in 2014 through this year.
