[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] Due to the spread of the Omicron variant, the number of new daily COVID-19 cases has exceeded 400,000. The number of critically ill patients also surpassed 1,200, marking an all-time high.
As of midnight on the 16th, the Central Disease Control Headquarters reported 400,741 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total cumulative cases to 7,629,275. This is an increase of 38,412 cases compared to the previous day (362,329 cases). The government had projected the peak of the outbreak to be around a weekly average maximum of 370,000 cases, but this has been exceeded.
The number of critically ill patients also reached a record high of 1,244, an increase of 48 from the previous day (1,196). The number of critically ill patients had remained in the 200s until mid-last month but has been steadily increasing since surpassing 1,000 on the 8th with 1,007 patients. The number of deaths decreased by 129 from the previous day (293) to 164, with the cumulative death toll at 11,052 and the cumulative fatality rate at 0.14%.
As the number of critically ill patients rises, hospital bed occupancy rates are also increasing. The total number of COVID-19 hospital beds is 52,248, with occupancy rates of 64.2% for critical care beds, 71.2% for semi-critical and moderate care beds, and 46.4% for mild care beds. The operation rate of residential treatment centers is 28.5%.
