Incheon City Conducts Source Tracking Investigation of Fine Dust Pollution at Three Key Sites Including Yeongjongdo
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon City announced on the 15th that it will conduct a component survey of major key areas to track and investigate sources of fine particulate matter (PM-2.5) pollution.
Unlike pollution surveys mainly conducted in urban areas, this investigation will expand its scope from island regions to major key points along the pollution inflow routes to understand the influence of fine dust inflow and background concentrations.
The City Health and Environment Research Institute plans to conduct a detailed component analysis of carbon, ions, heavy metals, and other substances contained in fine particulate matter at three key points?Jangbongdo, Yeongjongdo, and Guwol-dong?located along the inflow routes, considering Incheon's geographical characteristic as the starting point of overseas inflow of fine particulate matter.
Fine particulate matter present in the atmosphere is composed of numerous substances such as carbon, ions, and heavy metals, with very small particle sizes. These have various sources and characteristics, including direct emissions and secondary reactions in the atmosphere.
Additionally, it shows complex patterns depending on domestic emissions, meteorological factors, and overseas inflows such as yellow dust and fine dust.
To clarify the causes of fine particulate matter generation, it is necessary to comprehensively analyze the component characteristics and changes of dust over a long period at major inflow route points.
The Research Institute expects that by comparing and analyzing the characteristics of fine particulate matter in urban and island areas through this survey, it will be possible to scientifically identify the sources of fine particulate matter pollution along the inflow routes.

Kwon Moonju, Director of the Incheon City Health and Environment Research Institute, stated, "Although fine dust has shown a long-term decreasing trend, the decline slowed last year, and depending on the season and region, it significantly affects our daily lives and health. We will strive to identify the sources of fine dust pollution in Incheon, provide accurate air quality information, and improve air quality."
