On the 15th, Hapcheon-gun held the ‘2022 Carbon Neutral Participation Forest Tree Planting Event’ at the Hwanggang riverside, with the participation of about 150 executives and employees from related organizations.
This event, organized by Gyeongsangnam-do and Hapcheon-gun, was supported by five institutions including the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, Busan City, KNN, and environmental organizations, which signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the creation of a climate change response participation forest with Gyeongnam Province. It also involved various public and private sectors such as the Central Association of Forestry Cooperatives’ Bu-Ul-Gyeong regional headquarters and the Korea Forestry Successors Association.
The day began with an opening declaration by Jeong Seok-won, Director of Climate Environment and Forestry at Gyeongsangnam-do, followed by a welcoming speech from Moon Jun-hee, Mayor of Hapcheon-gun. In accordance with the Ministry of Environment’s ‘2050 Low Carbon Development Strategy,’ about 3,000 Zelkova trees and Azaleas were planted on idle land as a commemorative tree planting to proactively respond to the climate crisis.
Mayor Moon Jun-hee said, “This is a meaningful event that responds to the government’s policy of low-carbon green growth and fine dust reduction,” adding, “We will create a pleasant forest where trees and flowers harmoniously beautify the Hwanggang riverside.”
Including this event, plans are underway to develop 131 hectares of forest with economic afforestation, large tree planting, and regionally specialized afforestation to enhance climate change response as well as public and economic value.
