Enhancing the Brand Value of Specialized High Schools! ... Busan Office of Education Selects 30 Schools for Specialized High School Innovation Support Project
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education has selected 30 specialized high schools through a public contest for the operation of the ‘2022 Specialized High School Innovation Support Project.’
The Specialized High School Innovation Support Project aims to support customized vocational education linked with the local community and to enhance the brand value of specialized high schools.
Now entering its third year, the project is operated in four types reflecting the characteristics and circumstances of each school.
By type, six schools including Gyeongseong Electronics High School are classified as ‘Schools You Want to Attend,’ seven schools including Geumjeong Electronics High School as ‘Schools You Want to Stay At,’ twelve schools including Daekwang High School as ‘Schools That Develop Skills,’ and five schools including Gyeongnam Technical High School as ‘Schools That Fulfill Dreams.’
All specialized high schools operate common tasks such as developing and operating field-customized curricula, enhancing students’ character and self-esteem, and programs to support student career guidance and improve employment rates, along with type-specific mandatory tasks.
The type-specific mandatory tasks include: Type 1’s school branding strategy program to recruit new students; Type 2’s dropout mitigation specialty program; Type 3’s employment and entrepreneurship mindset enhancement program; and Type 4’s class innovation and global competency strengthening program.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education supports the 30 selected specialized high schools with a total budget of about 4 billion KRW, providing between 100 million and 160 million KRW depending on the number of classes.
Customized consulting using expert groups is also supported, and a performance presentation for each school is planned to share best practices among specialized high schools in the Busan area.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education selected and operated 15 schools in 2020 and 26 schools in 2021. Schools selected in 2021 operated middle school student vocational experience programs such as an online vocational experience competition to recruit new students.
Various employment competency enhancement programs utilizing local human and material resources, as well as diverse educational activities such as integrated classes combining general and specialized subjects and project-based classes, were also operated.
