As the Weather Warms Up... Craft Beer at Convenience Stores Gains Popularity
Release of 17 New Products This Year... Active Unique Collaborations
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] As the peak season for beer approaches in summer, the convenience store industry’s ‘craft beer war’ is intensifying. Each company is continuously launching new products, aiming for a second hit like the GomPyo wheat beer. Unique collaborations to capture the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z) are also active.
According to the convenience store industry on the 17th, a total of 17 new craft beers have been released this year. CU introduced 10 types since the beginning of the year, including Ttasangju White Ale, Mashi Lager Can, and Wiggle Wiggle Lemon Ale. GS25 sequentially launched 3 types such as Honey Ale Can, Maekssa, and Noted Smile Wheat Ale. Seven Eleven also released 4 types including Ddung-rang-i Beer and Oh-yeol Beer. Emart24 is currently preparing new craft beer products as well.
The reason each convenience store is focusing on craft beer is that sales of craft beer surged after GomPyo wheat beer caused a sold-out frenzy. CU’s craft beer sales increased by 255.2% compared to the previous year. GS25 (234.1%), Seven Eleven (229%), and Emart24 (251%) also saw significant growth. The popularity of craft beer continues this year as well. Until the 10th, CU’s sales rose by 155.1%, GS25 by 55%, Seven Eleven by 100.7%, and Emart24 by 286%.
