[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A petition demanding severe punishment for a maternal aunt who was arrested for assaulting and neglecting her five-year-old niece, resulting in the child's death, has been submitted to the Blue House.
On the 11th, the petitioner, who identified herself as the biological mother of the deceased girl A (5), posted a message titled "Request for Strong Punishment of the Maternal Aunt Who Committed Child Abuse and Child Murder." As of 7 p.m. on the 14th, the petition had garnered 1,524 signatures.
Earlier, on the 14th, the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency arrested and indicted B (41), the maternal aunt of A, on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes (child abuse resulting in death) and the Child Welfare Act (child abuse).
B is accused of hitting her niece A on the head and buttocks on the 13th of last month under the pretext of disciplining her for lying, then neglecting her, which led to A's death. Bruises were found all over A's body. Although A vomited during the day on the 14th of last month, B reportedly did not take any special measures, believing it was normal since the child had vomited before.
At around 6:15 p.m. on the same day, A collapsed in the bathroom at home. Other family members reported the incident, and A was taken to the hospital but passed away.

The petitioner stated, "After giving birth to my first and second daughters, my husband rarely came home and did not provide living expenses, so I was struggling while receiving financial support from my parents. In July of last year, he demanded a divorce," adding, "Around August last year, he ordered me to pack all the children's belongings and threatened to destroy everything in the house if I did not comply, so I packed the children's things."
She continued, "In August last year, my husband took the two daughters and left, then entrusted them to the maternal aunt the next day. I was unable to see my two daughters and despite countless attempts to contact them, I was only able to have two or three video calls."
She also said, "When I received a call from the prosecution informing me that my second daughter had died, I thought it was a phone scam (voice phishing). Hoping against hope, I called my ex-husband to ask about the daughters' well-being, but his answer was also a lie."
The petitioner emphasized, "Although bruises were confirmed all over the five-year-old child's body, the maternal aunt denied the abuse and is currently detained on charges of child abuse resulting in death. She violently assaulted a five-year-old child, who cannot distinguish right from wrong, under the guise of discipline. I want her to be severely punished for child abuse and murder."
