Songpa-gu Develops Nation's First 'Compact Smart CCTV' for Household Sewage Pipe Inspection
Resolving Small Camera and Mobile Phone Connection Issues in Household Sewer Backflow and Blockages
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) announced on the 13th that it has developed the nation’s first ‘Compact Smart CCTV’ device capable of inspecting small-scale pipelines such as household sewage pipes.
Mayor Park Seong-su of Songpa-gu explained the background, saying, “Management of household sewage pipes is the responsibility of the owner (individual) under the Sewerage Act, but when problems occur, residents have difficulty resolving them on their own due to high costs and other factors. Therefore, the district undertook the development of this device to provide convenience to residents in their daily lives.”
In fact, from 2019 to 2021, a total of 383 complaints regarding household sewage backflow and blockages were reported. Although owners are supposed to directly request sewer maintenance companies for cause investigation and maintenance, they faced difficulties in resolving issues due to lack of information about companies and cost problems.
Even when trying to resolve residents’ inconveniences using existing CCTV equipment owned by the district, those devices are intended for public sewer management (width 450mm or more), making it impossible to inspect small-scale household sewage pipes (width 250mm or less) due to their large size.
Recognizing these issues, the district’s Flood Control Division has repeatedly conducted research since last year on devices capable of inspecting small-scale pipelines internally, successfully developing the ‘Compact Smart CCTV’ system.
This device connects a small camera to a smartphone via a USB cable and operates through a CCTV app. It allows simple on-site inspection and filming of the interior of small-scale pipelines such as household sewage pipes by viewing the smartphone screen.
Going forward, the district plans to use the newly developed device to resolve residents’ inconveniences on-site whenever household sewage backflow or blockages occur.
