Virtual Store Implementation: Kind-Hearted Home Shopping... Expanding Media Walls for Eco-Friendly Broadcasting
Reducing Carbon Emissions with LED Lighting
Enhancing Digital Immersion and Vividness
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chunhan] The home shopping industry is expanding media wall studios while prominently promoting digital and eco-friendly broadcasting. This strategy aims to enhance corporate image in line with value consumption trends and achieve cost-saving effects.
On the 11th, Lotte Home Shopping operates a media wall measuring 22 meters wide and 3.6 meters high in one of its six studios. This location applies extended reality (XR) technology using the Unreal Engine, which implements virtual graphics in real-time on camera footage to create highly immersive broadcasts. For actual fashion products, store screens are displayed as videos to increase vividness, and for travel and insurance product broadcasts, local videos and product information are provided. The background can be changed multiple times during the broadcast, allowing effective screen production according to different situations.
The media wall significantly reduces waste generation and production costs compared to traditional methods. Typically, separate sets were created and dismantled for each product, but now only the screen needs to be changed. According to Lotte Home Shopping, the establishment of the media wall is expected to reduce annual set production costs by more than 10%. Additionally, by replacing 80% of studio lighting with LEDs, electricity usage was reduced by 45% and carbon emissions by 50%. They plan to replace all lighting with LEDs within this year to build a low-power, eco-friendly broadcasting environment.
Hyundai Home Shopping has converted three out of six studios into media wall studios. They first introduced media walls in 2016 and recently opened SpaceH on the first floor of their Seoul Gangdong-gu headquarters. SpaceH spans a total of 331㎡ (100 pyeong) and is equipped with an LED screen measuring 24 meters wide and 4 meters high. They plan to use LED lighting for all broadcasts to further reduce electricity consumption and carbon emissions. CJ OnStyle utilizes media walls measuring 24.6 meters wide and 4.05 meters high in two of its five studios. They are also piloting AI voices that can replace voice actors and show hosts, with AI show hosts currently under development.
