According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments, from midnight to 9 PM on this day, 196,880 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is 3,525 fewer than the 200,405 cases recorded during the same time frame the previous day. Compared to the count at the same time one week ago on the 28th of last month (133,917 cases), it is 1.5 times higher, and compared to two weeks ago on the 21st of last month (97,935 cases), it is double. Since there is still time until midnight when the count closes, the newly confirmed cases announced on the 8th are expected to increase further.
As of 9 PM on this day, new confirmed cases were 101,383 (51.5%) in the Seoul metropolitan area and 95,497 (48.5%) in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 52,048, Seoul 37,493, Busan 17,050, Gyeongnam 12,549, Incheon 11,842, Gyeongbuk 7,370, Daegu 7,300, Chungnam 6,995, Gwangju 6,405, Jeonbuk 6,267, Jeonnam 6,015, Chungbuk 5,741, Daejeon 5,608, Gangwon 5,415, Ulsan 4,560, Jeju 2,873, and Sejong 1,349.

According to health authorities, as of the 5th, the detection rate of the Omicron variant among domestic infection cases reached nearly 100% (99.96%). The daily new confirmed cases for the week starting from the 1st were 138,990 → 219,228 → 198,800 → 266,849 → 254,327 → 243,626 → 210,716, averaging 218,934 cases per day.
