Kim Seung-yeon's eldest son Kim Dong-gwan appointed as registered executive of Hanwha Co., leading future business initiatives

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Kim Dong-gwan, the eldest son of Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-yeon, has been appointed as an inside director, set to lead the group’s future businesses.
Hanwha Corporation announced on the 7th that its board of directors held a meeting and resolved to propose Kim Dong-gwan’s appointment as a registered executive at the upcoming shareholders’ meeting. The shareholders’ meeting will be held on the 29th at 10 a.m. Kim has been in charge of Hanwha Corporation’s Strategy Division since 2020. With this appointment as an inside director, he is expected to take the lead in future businesses such as the aerospace sector. Kim currently serves as president of Hanwha Solutions and as an inside director of Hanwha Aerospace. As an inside director of Hanwha Aerospace, he also oversees Hanwha Group’s space business control center, the ‘Space Hub.’ Hanwha Corporation explained, “In the ‘post-COVID’ era marked by increased uncertainty, responsible management is more necessary than ever, which was our primary consideration.”
Hanwha Group has achieved results in the space business sector, including establishing a space research center with KAIST, investing in and securing board participation rights in OneWeb, a space internet company under Hanwha Systems, and Hanwha Aerospace’s successful production of the 75-ton class engine for the Nuri rocket. Last year, Hanwha Corporation also entered the space business by signing an agreement with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute to develop a bi-propellant thruster, known as the ‘heart of the satellite.’

On the same day, Hanwha Corporation’s board of directors also resolved to propose the appointment of attorney Kwon Ik-hwan as an outside director at the shareholders’ meeting. Attorney Kwon is a compliance management expert who previously served as the head of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office. The company stated, “We have diversified the composition of the board and enhanced its expertise to expand the board’s capabilities and authority. Going forward, board-centered responsible management will be further strengthened.”
