COVID-19 Confirmed Cases Reach 174,537 Nationwide by 6 PM...29,774 Fewer Than Yesterday
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Amid the rapid spread of COVID-19 due to the Omicron variant, the number of confirmed cases nationwide reached the 170,000 range by 6 p.m.
According to local governments including Seoul on the 6th, from midnight to 6 p.m. on that day, 174,537 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is 29,774 fewer than the 204,311 cases recorded during the same time frame the previous day.
Compared to the count at the same time one week ago on the 27th of last month (117,188 cases), it increased by 1.5 times, and compared to two weeks ago on the 20th of last month (84,024 cases), it increased by 2.1 times. Since there is still time until midnight when the count is finalized, the number of new confirmed cases announced on the 7th is expected to be much higher.
As of 6 p.m. on that day, new confirmed cases were 88,600 (50.4%) in the metropolitan area and 86,531 (49.6%) in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, the numbers were: Gyeonggi 41,199, Seoul 35,504, Busan 17,552, Incheon 11,303, Gyeongnam 10,672, Daegu 7,728, Gyeongbuk 7,325, Gwangju 6,623, Chungnam 6,588, Daejeon 5,617, Gangwon 5,058, Jeonnam 4,843, Ulsan 3,922, Chungbuk 3,892, Jeonbuk 3,013, Jeju 2,570, and Sejong 1,128.

Since the Omicron variant became the dominant strain domestically, new confirmed cases have rapidly increased. Over the week starting from the 28th of last month, the daily new confirmed cases were 139,624 → 138,990 → 219,228 → 198,800 → 266,850 → 254,327 → 243,628, averaging 208,778 cases per day.
