SK Donates $1 Million for Refugee Children from 'Ukraine Invasion'... First Case Among Large Corporations
Scheduled for Delivery After Consultation with Local International Relief Organizations Through SKIET Poland Corporation
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] SK Group is donating $1 million (approximately 1.2 billion KRW) to aid children suffering from the large-scale refugee crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It is reported to be the first time a major domestic corporation has donated funds for Ukraine in relation to this war.
On the morning of the 3rd, SK Group held an emergency meeting of the Social Value (SV) Committee and decided on this donation. SK Group stated that SK Innovation Technology (SKIET) Poland branch will deliver the donation in consultation with local international relief organizations.
SK Group operates secondary battery and separator material production plants in Eastern Europe, among which SKIET began operating a battery separator factory with an annual capacity of 340 million square meters in Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, last October.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as of the previous day, over 1 million Ukrainian refugees have fled to neighboring countries, with nearly half, 454,000, seeking refuge in Poland.
SK Group has continuously pursued social value activities aimed at improving children's quality of life through the 'Safety Net' initiative, including the Happy Alliance to support children suffering from food insecurity.
Lee Hyunghee, Chairperson of the SV Committee, said, "SK has taken the lead in establishing safety nets to overcome social disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic," adding, "In accordance with SK's philosophy of pursuing social value, we have decided to immediately provide relief and humanitarian support for children suffering from the war."
