January Online Shopping Transactions Reach 16.5 Trillion Won... Surge in Travel and Transportation Demand
In January, online shopping transaction volume was recorded at 16.5438 trillion KRW, showing an increase of 1.7067 trillion KRW (11.5%) compared to the same month last year.
According to the "January Online Shopping Trends" released by Statistics Korea on the 3rd, online shopping transaction volume in January was 16.5438 trillion KRW, up 11.5% from the same month last year.
By product category, transaction volumes increased significantly in travel and transportation services (103.7%), food and groceries (17.5%), food services (17.6%), clothing (17.7%), and agricultural, livestock, and fishery products (26.3%).
The composition ratio of product categories was highest for food and groceries (15.0%, 2.4808 trillion KRW), food services (14.4%, 2.3886 trillion KRW), and home appliances, electronics, and communication devices (10.6%, 1.7475 trillion KRW), in that order.
The increase in travel and transportation services transaction volume is analyzed as a base effect due to a significant decrease in the same month last year. For food and groceries, the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and the Lunar New Year holiday appear to have increased online grocery shopping and delivery services.
By scope of merchandise handled, comprehensive malls recorded transaction volumes of 10.8435 trillion KRW, and specialty malls recorded 5.7003 trillion KRW, increasing by 6.4% and 22.7% respectively compared to the same month last year.
Online malls recorded 12.7812 trillion KRW, up 14.9% from the same month last year, while combined online and offline malls recorded 3.7626 trillion KRW, increasing by 1.3%.
Mobile transactions amounted to 12.4978 trillion KRW, increasing by 1.8624 trillion KRW (17.5%) over the year. The share of mobile shopping in total transaction volume rose by 3.8 percentage points to 75.5% compared to the same month last year.

For mobile transactions, food services (97.8%), e-coupon services (90.6%), children and infant products (82.8%), and pet supplies (81.9%) were the most frequently traded categories.
