Ruling and Opposition Parties Fail to Access 'Lee Jae-myung Investigation Records and Yoon Seok-yeol Strabismus' Data... Agreed to Simultaneous Data Access Tomorrow
"Police Agency Refuses Lee's Data Access Over Personal Information Protection"
Opposition: "Unacceptable by Executive," Ruling Party: "Not Intentional"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee requested the Ministry of Justice to review the criminal investigation records of Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, and materials related to allegations of 'different vision (budongswi)' concerning Yoon Seok-yeol, the People Power Party presidential candidate, but the request was denied.
Jang Je-won, the opposition party secretary of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and a member of the People Power Party, said to reporters after a meeting between ruling and opposition parties on the afternoon of the 2nd at the National Assembly, "The Legislation and Judiciary Committee requested two sets of materials, but the Minister of Justice only brought the materials related to Yoon candidate's budongswi, so the premise for reviewing them together was not met."
Regarding the reason for not submitting Lee candidate's investigation records, he said, "The Minister of Justice requested the investigation history from the National Police Agency, but the Police Commissioner refused. They said it is personal information and that Lee candidate must come in person." He added, "(We) are proposing to reconvene the Legislation and Judiciary Committee anytime to forcibly review the materials related to Lee candidate by resolution, but if that is not possible, how can we accept reviewing only Yoon candidate's materials unilaterally?"
He further criticized, "Yoon candidate's materials are provided by resolution of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee without the need for personal information protection, but Lee candidate's materials are withheld citing personal information protection despite the committee's resolution. The attitude of the executive branch is incomprehensible."
In response to the opposition's claims, Park Joo-min, the ruling party secretary of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and a member of the Democratic Party, rebutted, "(The opposition) says it was intentional, but that is not true at all. The investigation records are managed by the police. The Minister of Justice does not have the materials, so they have no choice but to request cooperation from the police to obtain them."
