Gokseong-gun, Yellow Ddukbbang Market Opens on March 5
Handcrafted Design Items and Homegrown Agricultural Products to Be Showcased
[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Cha Jong-sun] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that the local flea market ‘Ttukbang Market’ will open on March 5.
Ttukbang Market started in 2016, led by local residents, and is located along Gokseongcheon Stream where a shallow brook flows, with cherry trees providing shade. Visitors can enjoy various handmade crafts, food, and cultural performances.
The approximately 300-meter-long embankment street where the market is held has grown into a fairly large market, with an average of more than 60 seller teams participating each time.
Design items reflecting the unique sensibilities of creators, handmade yogurt made directly on farms, and healthy local agricultural products grown by the sellers themselves are very popular.
This year, leveraging the clean environment of Gokseong-gun through which the Seomjin River flows, the market will expand its eco-friendly slow food-related items.
Even without purchasing anything, Ttukbang Market is gaining popularity as a picnic spot among locals and travelers alike.
The unusual combination of the countryside’s relaxed atmosphere and the market’s characteristic bustle creates a unique aesthetic experience.
The scene is reminiscent of the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by the Neo-Impressionist painter Georges Seurat.
In particular, the yellow sunshades that wrap around the market street have become a symbol of Ttukbang Market.
Regular visitors say that the first sign of spring in Gokseong is not the forsythia or cherry blossoms, but the yellow Ttukbang Market.
Various cultural performances and exhibitions also attract visitors to Ttukbang Market.
As a cultural marketplace, last year featured diverse programs such as a life sculpture exhibition, drawing contests, and Ttukbang Radio at each event.
This year, they plan to offer programs and events to entertain visitors, including yoga classes, marionette performances, and traditional Korean water stone skipping.
A Ttukbang Market official said, “Ttukbang Market is not a place you need to prepare for or come with a big plan. We hope visitors come comfortably like a walk following wherever their feet lead, swaying in the gentle river breeze to welcome the approaching new spring.”
Ttukbang Market will be held every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting March 5 along the Gokseongcheon riverside in Gokseong-eup, Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do.
