Jangheung-gun Establishes Carbon Neutral Foundation... Plants 300,000 Trees
A Total Project Cost of 1.2 Billion Won Invested to Prevent Landslides During the Monsoon Season's Heavy Rainfall
[Jangheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 28th that it plans to plant 300,000 trees this year to establish a carbon-neutral foundation and a stable timber supply system.
This afforestation project will be carried out on a total area of 142 hectares (292,000 trees), including 78 hectares of economic tree cultivation, 19 hectares of large tree planting, 42 hectares of regional specialized afforestation, and 3 hectares of fire-resistant forest belts.
The project targets forest land where timber harvesting has been completed within the region, aiming to respond to climate change, promote timber utilization, and expand the supply of domestic timber.
Economic tree species such as cypress and tulip trees, as well as large trees (4-year-old cypress) for landslide prevention during the monsoon season’s heavy rains, are being prioritized for planting in disaster-prone areas.
Reflecting the opinions of forest owners, regional specialized afforestation is also gaining positive responses by planting species such as lacquer trees, angelica trees, and poison ivy, which can generate income in a relatively short period.
The county plans to promote idle land projects by discovering paddy fields and dry fields that cannot be cultivated and planting trees, thereby simultaneously achieving the public value of forests and income generation for forest owners.
This project, with a total budget of 1.2 billion won, is scheduled to be completed by the end of April to ensure that the planted tree species can take root healthily.
After afforestation is completed, continuous forest care such as weeding and nurturing young trees will be carried out.
