Ahn Faction Expresses Regret Over Disclosure of Unification Timeline... "An Act Against Ethics"
Lee Taegyu, General Election Headquarters Chief of the People’s Party, Holds Press Conference at National Assembly on 28th
Criticizes and Explains Diary Released by People Power Party the Previous Day
[Asia Economy Reporters Kum Boryeong, Park Juni] The People’s Party expressed strong regret over the People Power Party’s disclosure of the unification negotiation log.
On the 28th, Lee Taegyu, the general headquarters chief of the People’s Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly and stated, “After Ahn Cheol-soo, the People’s Party presidential candidate, declared his intention to complete the race, they repeatedly requested to resume talks, including Yoon Seok-youl, the People Power Party presidential candidate. We met with goodwill to verify the truth, but unilaterally exposing their claims just because things did not go their way is clearly against political ethics and morality.”
Candidate Yoon disclosed the unification negotiation process with the People’s Party the day before. He also claimed that both sides agreed on opposition unification, but Ahn ultimately notified the final breakdown.
Lee criticized, “Reading the negotiation result log, which seems to have been written with the intention of ‘exposing if things don’t go as planned,’ I felt as if I were looking at a false statement in an investigative agency. Seeing the content and disclosure of this log, I cannot help but ask where the sincerity of unification they have claimed and appealed for all this time really lies.”
He also rebutted the contents of the negotiation log disclosed by the People Power Party. Lee explained, “Regarding Choi Jin-seok, the standing election committee chairman of the People’s Party, it was arranged as if Chairman Choi proposed some unification conditions to Candidate Yoon, but Chairman Choi mainly listened to Candidate Yoon’s words and never made any prior proposals. Candidate Yoon’s words were conveyed to Candidate Ahn, who responded, ‘Let me think about it more,’ and that was the end of the matter.”
He added, “They are distorting the facts as if various negotiation channels such as Sung Il-jong?In Myeong-jin and Lee Cheol-gyu?Shin Jae-hyun were operating. The clear fact is that former Liberty Korea Party emergency committee chairman In Myeong-jin and People’s Party election committee standing advisor Shin Jae-hyun were officially requested by Candidate Ahn to refrain from involvement in negotiation-related matters.”
Lee emphasized, “The process of confirming Candidate Yoon’s intentions was through People Power Party lawmaker Jang Je-won, and ultimately, the meetings between candidates were held only based on the content disclosed by Candidate Yoon’s side. Everything was insufficient, and the meetings did not take place after judgment. This is the entirety of the facts.”
When asked by reporters after the press conference, “Under what conditions would you consider agreeing to unification?” he responded, “Regarding the People Power Party’s move yesterday, I think it was a public declaration that they will not unify,” expressing a negative view on the possibility of resuming negotiations.
