The scholarship recipients are Kang Yujin, a graduate student in the Department of Life Sciences, and Jeong Wonwoo, a graduate student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
The Asan Social Welfare Foundation has been selecting and supporting graduate students in related fields since 2017 to nurture future talents in biomedical science. Selected scholarship recipients receive scholarships worth up to 20 million KRW annually for up to four years.
UNIST has been producing new scholarship recipients every year since 2017.
Graduate student Kang Yujin said, "I have always doubted whether I am the right person for research and have worked hard to prove it through results," adding, "Being selected as a scholarship recipient will be a motivation to take on challenges with greater confidence in my research."
Graduate student Kang Yujin is conducting research on DNA damage repair occurring in chromatin, the condensed structure of DNA.
DNA can be damaged by various causes, and our body has functions to detect and repair this damage.
The problem arises when damage repair is not properly carried out, leading to fatal diseases such as cancer. The research team is focusing on understanding the operating principles of the damage repair system.

Graduate student Kang Yujin stated, "I have achieved research results revealing protein binding interactions involved in chromatin formation using DNA curtains and have also developed a new platform to enhance experimental performance," adding, "I plan to focus on developing efficient and convenient biomolecular imaging technologies and applying them to DNA damage repair research."
